Self-Chattng Has Meaning for Them
Shinichi, a bilingual writer, worked as a reservation staff at a luxury hotel from 2008 to 2018. He has been officially diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); however, he was fortunate to learn the formal behaviour while working for the hotel. In his experience, all reservation staff answered customers using sophisticated language (English or Japanese) with honorific words (敬語). Shinichi realized such behaviours created a comfortable atmosphere.
Likewise, Shinichi recognized that self-chatting(独り言) also creates the same atmosphere depending on how formal the words are. To illustrate, have you ever wondered why one individual mutters to themselves when nobody else is around? Nowadays, some people chat with others via Bluetooth earphones. Perhaps nobody would wonder about such a situation, especially in oral recognition, such as English or French. Conversely, somebody might find visual recognition odd, such as in Japanese.
Echolalia Wordpower
Some individuals unwittingly mutter in the public space. In this circumstance, Japan and other countries have unique differences. If individuals who couldn’t tell essential messages to friends or colleagues mutter about complaints in other public spaces, most users or passengers should be surprised and uncomfortable. However, others wouldn’t be able to stop slipping out their words.
Echolalia- it is a time lag that occurs in autistic individuals. In the autistic community, there are two types of echolalias: immediate or delayed. What is the immediate echolalia? For example, some shop staff say, “These confectionaries are ten dollars please,” to shoppers. Ordinary shoppers would give a bill by replying, “Here you are” or “Thank you.” But some autistic individuals may repeat what shop staff said, like a parrot. In this case, experts refer to immediate echolalia.
On the other hand, there is a time lag in the delayed echolalia. For instance, in television or radio shows, some catchphrases in commercial times on broadcasting. Some autistic persons are suddenly reminded of such words after several hours. They may also be inspired to use catchwords when chatting with families, friends, and colleagues. For such reason, other families or friends would have been bewildered or confused. Experts refer to this situation as delayed echolalia.
Utilized Echolalia as Self-Chatting for founding Inner Voice
In his adulthood, Shinichi recognized that echolalia may represent their honest inner voice. The human brain has two hemispheres, left and right. In the left hemisphere, people seem to associate with analytical and logical thinking, like a search engine. Conversely, the right brain processes their emotions, such as happiness, anger, sadness, and pleasure (喜怒哀楽).
Shinichi also frequently chat with himself. Somebody may be incredible, he can hear his inner voice what he spoke after speaking for a couple of minutes, like an echo. He trucked down it seems the mechanism of delay ecolalia. Shinichi began to believe such brain function would help to improve their minds.
